The NVidia control panel displays the external monitor only as Analog VGA when before it displayed the actual HP model number. Re-installing the monitor driver does not resolve anything. Now, after I got back from traveling where I used the laptop by itself, the HP 2709m is no longer automatically recognized and attaching it via the VGA port downgrades the monitor display to 1440x900 or 1600x1200. I had the monitor attached to the laptop until 10 days ago and no problems whatsoever - the laptop display was disabled and the HP was the primary display at its best setting of 1920x1080. I bought a HP 2709m and simply by attaching it to the VGA port (the only display port on the laptop), the laptop display downgraded to 1920x1080 and mirrored its image onto the HP 2709m monitor without any manual intervention. The display is Hi-Res (1920x1200) on a NVidia 8600GT M chip. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 fully upgraded to W7 Pro and running smoothly.
